Developing Function Scenario of Future TV

본 연구는 미디어 환경의 패러다임이 변함에 따라 미래 미디어 소비 행태 및 TV의 주요 기능 정의하고 사용자 중심의 경험을 제공할 수 있는 시나리오 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 다음과 같은 연구과정을 진행하였다.

  1. 연구이슈추출
  2. 트렌드 리서치를 통하여 미디어 및 미디어 관련 제품의 현재 동향 분석을 통해 전반적인 경향을 살펴 본다. 현재 이슈가 되고 있는 주요 미디어 및 미디어 관련 서비스의 특징과 기술적 특이점을 발견하고, 향후 도래할 미래의 미디어 환경과 서비스 구조는 어떻게 될 것인지에 대한 전체적인 흐름을 파악한다.
  3. 유저리서치를 통하여 미래 TV를 제안하는데 있어서 연구자가 아닌 사용자의 다양한 상황(context)에서의 요구사항(needs)을 파악하였다.

Development of Personal Console & Its application for Intelligent Responsive Space

This project intended to design applications of the IRS(intelligent responsive space). Through bare-hand interaction design and concept of personal console, IRS system was improved. The scenario of proposed concept was also presented.

Development of IPTV next-generation User Interface
Korean Title     K사를 위한 IPTV 차세대 user interface 제안

This project aimed at development of innovative user-interface design of IPTV. Existing service had complicated user-interface design which hard to find specific contents. This project was accomplished through 3 research phases which presented direction of next-generation UI, existing problems, and verification result of improved user-interface design.

Emotionally Attractive Quality Guideline for Mobile Phone
Korean Title     모바일 폰을 위한 감성적 매력 퀄리티 가이드라인

This study focuses on what is mobile experience’s emotional attraction and aims to propose relative mobile design guideline. After measuring users’ emotion change before the use, in the user and after the use of mobile phone, several important emotional factors were proposed. Based on the emotionally attractive evaluation on 3 types of mobile phone in the experiment, emotionally attractive quality guidelines for mobile phone were finally presented.


  1. Through ‘shop visiting’, ‘eyegaze analysis’ methods, factors of emotional evocation before using the mobile phone were extracted.
  2. Through ‘heuristic evaluation’, ‘UT’ methods, factors of emotional evocation in using the mobile phone were extracted.
  3. Through ‘pocket story’, ‘experience monologue’ methods, factors of emotional evocation after using the mobile phone were extracted.
  4. Emotional attraction measurement and emotion evoking factors analysis based on the appearance and functions of 3 types of mobile phone.




Interface and Usability Research of Washing Machine
Korean Title     세탁기 인터페이스 및 사용성 연구

This research carried out users’ usability evaluation regarding to drum washing machine’s control panel and PUI factors as well as investigated the real context of using the washing machine. Through ‘Home visiting’, ‘FGI’ methods, the interface relevant problems and factors for improvement were extracted. Finally, the user-centered innovative interface concept was proposed.


  1. Study on the context of users’ usage of washing machine, such as using frequency, using procedure and using methods, in the real home environment.
  2. Usability test focuses on comparative evaluation of learnability, error rate and efficiency between drum washing machine and others.
  3. Practical interface concept design for control panel and PUI factors.




Users' Mobile Device Using Environment Observation Research
Korean Title     모바일 사용자 환경 관찰 연구

This research carried out synthetic analysis on various daily mobile activities of young generation who are good at managing mobile device and UCC (User Created Contents) and proposed in depth on products manufacture direction.

  2. Proposed user-centered functions through in-depth analysis.




Next Generation of Mobile Phone Concept Development Research
Korean Title     차세대 모바일 폰 컨셉 개발 연구

In mobile web circumstance, this project aims to create new functions of mobile phone with "persona" based on various in-depth needs of users.


  1. Classify sections of whole generation’s persona.
  2. Analyze users’ experience based on the trends of users’ section.
  3. Develop next generation mobile phone concept by emphasizing analyzed experience.
  4. Propose the basic interaction scheme for the developed concept.

Developing Next Generation Printer

Based on the research of current printer’s using context, future needs were predicted. Functions and usage were previewed from various angles, and human-centered in-depth needs on printer’s function and form were proposed by considering different environment, such as: entertainment place, office, home, and public place.


  1. Synthetic understanding of printer technology.
  2. Synthesize users’ needs of print in entertainment place, office, home, and public place.
  3. Develop concepts based on which to develop product through brainstorming.
  4. Create prototype and interaction methods. Develop scenario for using the product.




Developing Intelligent Interactive Space Technology
Korean Title     지능형 반응공간 기술 개발-사용성 평가를 위한 계량화 및 테스트 기술 개발

This project aimed to develop the information sharing methods on the large display and interaction concept for people in the meeting. The scenario of proposed concept was also presented. The project emphasized the basic gesture interactive concept with various functions rather than using extra input device.

  2. User research in the context and interaction of the meeting.
  3. Scenario proposal of intuitive interaction concept and function.




Cross-Cultural Study on User Experience Models for UI Localization
Korean Title     UI 현지화 프로젝트

This project was done with the collaborative work from Korean, Chinese, Dutch, and Indian research teams. The project aimed to grasp the prior factors to be considered when design product interface for each country’s users. By comparing and analyzing cultural differences among these countries, the similarities and the differences of prior factors need to be considered were concluded.


  1. We have gained much know-how through this 2nd international cooperation.
  2. Korean and Chinese interface have much similar factors; Indian emphasize the sharing aspect; Dutch people emphasize individual factors.
  3. We discovered that differences exist in different markets around the world since differences exist in different countries.




TV Input Device Usability Evaluation and Design Guideline Proposal
Korean Title     TV 입력장치의 비교 사용성 평가를 통한 가이드라인 제안

In the new TV using environment, suitable navigation methods of TV were designed. Based on usage comparison of various PUI input devices and GUI styles, the most effective input device was proposed in order to mange the large amount of contents.


  1. Focus on the function of contents navigation, items selection, and media control.
  2. New PUI and GUI factors research and trends analysis of other mobile device.
  3. 9 different kinds of input devices and working GUI prototype were developed. The usability test was carried out and the final concept was proposed.

Research on Developing 3G Mobile Phone Using Scenario

This project presented scenarios to show how internet technology and mobile phone interaction technology would be used in the new generation of mobile communication. Through wide range of user research methods, current mobile needs were synthesized and future mobile phone’s developing trends were presented.


  1. Research on mobile technology trends.
  2. Define in-depth required functions through various user research methods.
  3. Develop ‘killer application’ through brain storming.
  4. Present created functions through scenario.




Research on Chinese Mobile Phone
Korean Title     중국향 모바일 폰 연구

This project presented LG mobile phone’s competitiveness after comparing and analyzing 9 successful selling mobile phones in Chinese market. This project was collaborated with students from Tsinghua University. The heuristic evaluation on these 9 phones was done by local experts. Korean researcher extracted competitiveness of those 9 phones based on the heuristic evaluation results. Heuristic evaluation considered products’ PUI factors and GUI factors.


  1. The first project to work with another country.
  2. In Chinese market, brand takes more value than product’s attractive factors.
  3. Price competition of current mobile phone is emphasized.
